Become a Volunteer

As with all voluntary and charitable organisations, the Nautical Museums Trust (NMT), which runs the Shipwreck Museum, relies on the invaluable work of trustees and volunteers. Help is needed with so many aspects of running what is not only a significant repository of historical artefacts but also a major tourist attraction in the popular seaside town of Hastings, welcoming around 80,000 visitors each year.

A volunteer can choose from a variety of tasks, from assisting with administration, stewarding, serving in the Museum shop, marketing, publicity, fund-raising and providing IT services, to mention just a few. There are also cleaning and maintenance assignments which need doing.

The NMT also requires a strong body of trustees which can provide firm and imaginative leadership ensuring the successful future of the Museum and its activities. Ideally, in addition to enthusiasm and commitment, each trustee should be able to bring a specific skill set to the group covering, maybe, finance, law, marketing, publicity, fundraising or some other specialist knowledge that could be of assistance in providing solid and reliable governance.

In this age of Skype, Zoom and Microsoft Teams, a trustee need not necessarily live in or near Hastings. Meetings are usually held around every six weeks and last anything from one to two hours. Even volunteers can provide their services from afar. Whereas stewarding and maintenance often need to be carried out on site, other activities such as marketing, publicity, IT support, legal advice, and so on, could be conducted from your own home.
