The America Ground
The present-day site of Robertson Street and Claremont was once known locally as the ‘America Ground’. In this talk by Ken Brooks we will look at paintings and photographs of the town centre, which in medieval times was a natural harbour. By the early 19th century an area to the west of Priory Stream had become a ‘no-mans land’ with over 1000 squatters living in homes made from scrap materials.
