Stirling Castle leather hats – launch of Citizen Science initiative

Angela Middleton and Serena Cant launched a Citizen Science appeal on Monday 1 August. Angela is analysing the leather hats from the wreck of the Stirling Castle from a conservation perspective, while Serena has been researching images from c1650 to c1750 in maritime and other contexts. They have also both been researching surviving hats from shipwrecks elsewhere.

We know we have not necessarily found all images of sailors wearing hats from about that time. The hats are very unusual in material and shape for their date (the wreck took place in 1703 and is a protected site on the Goodwin Sands) so we’re keen to find out more.

We’re running the appeal until 31 August with a dedicated inbox StirlingCastleHats@HistoricEngland.org.uk, and on @HE_Maritime with the Twitter hashtag #LeatherHats. Our blog is on:https://thewreckoftheweek.wordpress.com/2016/08/01/the-stirling-castle/
Stirling Castle Hat Blog now contains a link to an interactive 3D pdf for each hat.
